Highway No. 422 Solana Beach, CA 92075 Website: GreenEdge Kids http://www.greenedgekids.com Nature of Business: Online boutique for kids eco-fashions, sizes 2-12 Mission: Providing a diverse and comprehensive range of fashionable and sustainable children`s clothing so that parents and children can commit to wearing eco-friendly clothing the same way a person can commit to organic foods. Relation to Your Community: GreenEdge Kids is extremely active in our community. We participate in community events, volunteer time and money to the schools, volunteer time with the City`s Clean and Green Committee, donate gift certificates to local cities and schools for eco-community and school-related events. Sustainability Goals Your Company Embraces: GreenEdge Kids considers a sustainability cost-benefit in every way it does business and continually looks for ways to improve the choice. Example: We are an internet company that ships out packages to customers. We spent hours researching packing tapes to look for a biodegradable and eco-friendly variety. Now that we have been taping up packages, we have considered the fact that we could use less tape if we purchased UPS labels instead of printing on the back side of paper, so by January we plan to replace the labels and reduce the use of non biodegradable tape. Example 2: We wanted to print up eco-friendly t-shirts, and we learned of a plant-based ink shop in Florida. Yet since we live in California, we had to consider the impact of shipping t-shirts to Florida and back, and chose instead to use a water-based screenprinter located nearby in San Diego County. We apply this method of thinking to all of our business practices. Additional Green Directory Listings Green Badges | Reducing toxic emissions reason By buying organic cotton, hemp, wool, and other sustainable materials, you help reduce demand on chemical-intensive cotton crops. 100 percent of the products we sell are made from sustainable materials. Approximately 80 percent of the products we sell come from the USA, and we prioritize this in our buying decisions, so there is less shipping and stricter standards applied to the manufacturing process. We look for U.S.-milled fabrics and U.S.-grown cotton, as well as cut and sewn in the U.S. | | No chemical inputs reason By buying organic cotton, hemp, wool, and other sustainable materials, you help reduce demand on chemical-intensive cotton crops. 100% of the products we sell are made from sustainable materials, that require little and primarily no pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides. Most require the least toxic methods of processing into fabric as part of their organic certifications. We sell colorgrown cotton garments, that have no dyes at all. | | Minimizing use of non-renewables reason We request from all of our suppliers that they do not send clothing in plastic bags. We store clothing in clean and safe storage units that do not require plastic. When we receive plastic bags anyway, we recycle them within our City, which has a U.S.-based recycling program that turns the bags into plastic lumber. We minimize travel and energy use across the board, and purchase renewable energy offsets from Native Energy. | | Using recycled materials reason We purchase clothing made from both pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled fabric. All of our paper used for checks, hang tags, office supplies, promotional postcards, gift certificates, etc. is made from post-consumer recycled paper and printed with soy inks. Our wood displays used for trade shows are made from reclaimed construction waste. | | Using sustainably produced material reason All of our products are made with sustainably produced materials. Materials used in our clothing include: organic cotton, hemp, Tencel, recycled fabric, soy, alpaca, organic wool, and bamboo (though we think bamboo is the least sustainable of the alternative fabrics). | | Reducing waste reason We throw next to nothing away. We re-use any packing materials we receive. We recycle office paper after it\'s been used on both sides. We re-use boxes until they don\'t seem structurally stable, in which case we recycle them. We chose a biodegradable banner for our booth banner at shows. We try to get people to sign up for the newsletter instead of taking postcards at events to cut down on paper waste. We use paper hangers that are made of 100% post-consumer paper waste and fully recyclable. | | Conserving natural resources reason We donate $1 for every GreenEdge tee shirt sold to the Arbor Day Foundation, which will plant one tree for every $1 we donate. Also, we tend to prioritize clothing made from recycled materials, which doesn't require nearly as much resources to produce as other new materials, including organic cotton. | | Using local raw materials reason Boxes are from local stores and sources. Most clothing is produced in the U.S., and most of the U.S.-produced clothing is made in southern California. We do all our printing, both for t-shirts and for postcards, in San Diego County to minimize any shipping back and forth. We look for products that are not only made in USA, but made in USA of US-milled fabrics and US materials to cut down on shipping. For example, we made sure our sustainable hang tags were made in California, despite the fact that most sustainable hang tags are printed up in Hong Kong | | Conserving energy reason We use very little energy by incorporating all conservation practices in our office. We also encourage customers to minimize returns by coordinating more with them up front regarding sizes, colors, fit, and other questions about products. | | Using renewable energy reason We purchase renewable energy carbon offsets from Native Energy. | | Little or no packaging used reason Our shipping boxes are 100% re-used boxes that we collect from stores and people who receive them, as well as those we receive from our vendors. When we pack shipments, we use a single sheet of recycled USA-made tissue paper to keep the clothing clean during shipment, and sometimes newspaper, used tissue, or used packing materials to fill any empty space in the package. We don't purchase any packing material. |
