Sterile items and kits that are expired or opened and not used are sent to an FDA approved third party vendor to be repacked, resterilized, and reused instead of being thrown out.
Sterile items and kits that cannot be repackaged and re-sterilized are collected in our Distribution Warehouse and donated to local, national, and international organizations to assist in meeting the needs of the underserved, such as Hurricane Katrina relief, over-seas medical missions, and non-profit organizations.
Reusable drink mugs are available both in the cafeteria and in our Bistro. To promote purchase, the first refill is included with the purchase price of the mug.
Regulated medical waste at SVH (excluding sharps) is sterilized prior to transport and disposal at the local landfill. This sterilization process reduces the volume of the waste by 50%. We process an average of 12,000 gallons per month.
To date in calendar year 2008 SVH has shredded/recycled 25,000 lbs of paper.
|  | Using organic products reason Use of all-purpose cleaners and waxes with the Green Seal certification by our Environmental Services Department. |  | Reducing toxic emissions reason Installed a state-of-the-art steam sterilizer for medical waste, we eliminated the use of an onsite incinerator, which contributed significant amounts of air pollution. We use low sulfer diesel fuel for out generators and boilers and have installed an oxygen trim on the boiler controls in order to increase efficiency and reduce carbon monoxide emissions.
Conversion from glutaraldehyde to ortho-Phthalaldehyde (OPA) for high level disinfection; OPA is much less hazardous than glutaraldehyde.
Implementation of computed radiography and picture archive computer systems have eliminated nearly all of the wet chemical processors (16 of 18) that were previously used for developing x-ray film. The chemicals used in the wet processors were hazardous.
SVH is 99% mercury free and has been for at least 6 years. The remaining 1%, which is necessary, is carefully collected and properly disposed of in order to prevent it from entering our waste stream.
SVH complies with Montana’s Universal Waste Regulations.

|  | Conserving natural resources reason We conserve water by using micro-fiber mops instead of the traditional loop style mop and bucket saving 70,000 gallons of water per year at SVH. We have installed toilets and shower heads that reduce water use. In 2009, a well will be installed on campus to subsidize water usage through local utilities. |  | Conserving energy reason Replaced windows with low ultraviolet, high-efficiency panes with additional tinting for energy efficiency. Installed new roofs with additional insulation. New heating and cooling systems and new variable air volume air-handlers. New high-efficiency lighting, indoors and out, and numerous rooms have motion sensor light switches so lights are turned off automatically when there is no activity in the meeting rooms and offices. We have also replaced energy consuming air dryers for medical air with new state of the art filters which require no power. |  | Little or no packaging used reason We re-use packaging materials, such as packing peanuts, plastic, and paper rather than disposing of it and purchasing new.

|  | Recycling program reason According to recently-implemented tracking, SVH has recycled 95 tons of cardboard in CY 2008 thus far, at a rate of approximately 700 lbs per day.
At least 100 lbs of paper per week is reused (scratch-pads). 25,000 pounds have been shredded and recycled.
Our current formal pick-up service estimates 25 pounds of aluminum per month. Significant amounts may be recycled beyond this, but the amounts are unknown. Aluminum is one of our key initiatives for growth in CY2009 so monitoring and measuring this volume should be in place by this time next year.
